Two years ago I received an email from an excited bride named Zorena who was planning a St. Matthews Church wedding in Otterbourne, Hampshire. She was a language student living in Italy and she loved my photography. I liked Zorena right from the start – being a student she didn’t have a lot of money but she was willing to save up for the photographer she wanted. This was a huge compliment and told me that Zorena valued her investment in me and my photography. She wasn’t price shopping, she was investing in her first family heirloom.
Zorena is very organised and had already purchased two wedding dresses and a swanky pair of Vivienne Westwood shoes by the time we met in December 2011.
Zorena is now living back in the UK and spent the morning of her wedding getting ready at her mum’s house with her mum, sister Cassie, her soon to be sister-in-law Charlotte and good friend Julie who owns the dance club where Zorena teaches pole dancing. That’s right – pole dancing! She’s kinda bad ass and competes in competitions. That’ll be why Zorena has perfectly toned arms and such a lovely figure.
Zorena married her finance Ben on 7th September 2013 at St.Matthew’s Church in Otterbourne, near Winchester, Hampshire but the wedding wasn’t completely traditional. Zorena and Ben opted for a first look which they had planned to do in a quiet field near by. Due to heavy rain that morning, they decided it would be better to head for The White Horse pub, just down the road from the church instead.
First looks are very popular amongst American couples and the trend is starting to take off here in the UK as well. For those who aren’t afraid to break tradition, a first look gives you the opportunity to see your betrothed in a quiet location away from the rest of the wedding party before the ceremony takes place. Some couples would be quite unsure of this idea but I personally think it’s a lovely idea. You get to spend time with the love of your life and see each other in your wedding finery without all the spectators and it gives you a chance to really take in the moment. The only spectators you will have are your photographers but we stay far back during the first look and don’t interfere at all. We simply document the moment for you. Zorena and Ben were my first couple to request a first look and I’m so pleased they did.
After the first look we had time for a drink in The White Horse before the ceremony. I have to say, this is probably one of the most relaxed weddings I’ve photographed. I can’t say I’ve ever had time to sit in the pub and have a drink before a wedding ceremony before so this was a welcome novelty. Although Zorena and Ben invited us to join them at their table, we opted to sit at the table opposite in order to give them time to chat on their own. It also gave me the opportunity to capture the image below which was completely unposed.
In keeping with their untraditional approach to their wedding day, Zorena and Ben walked into St. Matthew’s Church together – I just love these images as they walk up the church path. Priceless!
Zorena’s sister, Cassie has the voice of an angel and sang a beautiful rendition of Ave Maria during the wedding ceremony.
Officially Mr and Mrs!!
Zorena! You work it girl!
I am in love with these confetti shots!
After the wedding ceremony and a few photographs outside the church, Zorena and Ben asked if we could visit the field where they had planned to have their first look. Luckily the rain held off for most of the day and Zorena wasn’t concerned about getting mud or grass stains on her dress at all. She even climbed over a stile – totally my kind of bride!
Whilst taking bride and groom portraits, the wind picked up and pulled Zorena’s wedding veil from her hair, after which we were able to capture the image below.
The wedding celebrations continued at Otterbourne Village Hall where Zorena and Ben wowed their guests with a rock ‘n’ roll style first dance.
I’m so lucky to be hired by such fun loving, adventurous couples like Zorena and Ben who will be heading off on a Caribbean cruise in a couple of weeks. That sounds pretty awesome to me. Have a great time guys! xx
